Binah as a Hebrew word
Proverbs 3:19: Binah is understanding or discernment in the proverb’s account of the heavens. Its pairing with Chokmah is textual; the assignment to a left-hand supernal sphere belongs to later Kabbalistic diagrams.
SEFER YETZIRAH LAYER
The 3th count is not yet Binah
In a common recension, the third counted sefirah is water from spirit. That sequence supplies an order of formation rather than the name Binah. Later readers can compare water, receptivity, and understanding, but the comparison should not be printed as a direct definition from Sefer Yetzirah.

What Kircher makes visible
Kircher labels the upper-left circle Binah and Intelligentia. It mirrors Chokmah across the top, connects upward to Kether, and sends lines toward Geburah and Tiphereth. The plate makes “understanding” a containing counterweight through position before any Victorian Saturn attribution is added.
GOLDEN DAWN AND CROWLEY
Saturn, Tzaphqiel, and the four Threes
Golden Dawn tables align Binah with Saturn, YHVH Elohim, Tzaphqiel, Thrones, and the Threes. Crowley’s 777 presents them horizontally under separate headings. Saturn is therefore a Hermetic correspondence, not a hidden gloss inside Proverbs.
MODERN SYNTHESIS
How the shorthand was assembled
Modern pages often equate Binah with structure, boundary, the mother, or grief. Those themes combine medieval symbolism with Golden Dawn Saturn language and later psychology; none should erase the simpler Hebrew sense of discernment.
