The letter name is commonly glossed “palm of the hand.” Kircher places it between Chesed and Netzach; the Golden Dawn later aligns it with Jupiter and Wheel of Fortune. Each statement belongs to a different historical layer.

Kaph among the double letters

Kaph is one of the seven double letters in Sefer Yetzirah, associated with paired pronunciations and sevenfold sets such as planets. Recensions disagree about the detailed planetary order; the later Golden Dawn table assigns Jupiter and Wheel of Fortune to Kaph.

Kaph is a double letter. Jupiter is the Golden Dawn planet assignment, and recension differences in the seven doubles make the layer boundary especially important.

From Chesed to Netzach

Kircher’s Kaph runs down the right pillar from Chesed to Netzach. The long vertical joins ordered mercy to victory or endurance, a route that later Jupiter symbolism reads as expansion through cycles.

Chesed contributes steadfast kindness or mercy, while Netzach contributes victory, endurance, or perpetuity.

Jupiter and Wheel of Fortune

The Golden Dawn correspondence gives path 21 the attribution Jupiter and the tarot trump Wheel of Fortune. This row is later than Kircher’s plate and much later than the letter classification.

Crowley shortens Wheel of Fortune to Fortune while retaining Jupiter. The change shifts attention from a pictured object to the principle of change without altering the inherited letter row.

The changed title or letter assignment is substantive. Printing both labels without a date would collapse a historical revision into an apparent synonym.

Modern readings emphasize opportunity, cycles, scale, or changing conditions. The open palm can receive or turn; Jupiter magnifies; the pillar supplies continuity.
