The letter name is commonly glossed “weapon or sword.” Kircher places it between Binah and Tiphareth; the Golden Dawn later aligns it with Gemini and The Lovers. Each statement belongs to a different historical layer.

Zayin belongs to the twelve simple letters in Sefer Yetzirah, associated with months and zodiacal signs. Their exact ordering varies by recension; the text does not draw the later Binah to Tiphareth connection assigned to Zayin.

Zayin is a simple letter. Gemini is the later Hermetic sign assignment; Sefer Yetzirah’s twelvefold framework does not draw this particular diagonal.

From Binah to Tiphareth

Kircher places Zayin between Binah and Tiphereth. The diagonal crosses from the containing left supernal sphere toward the center, giving division and reunion a visible trajectory.

Binah contributes understanding, while Tiphareth contributes beauty or glory.

The Golden Dawn correspondence gives path 17 the attribution Gemini and the tarot trump The Lovers. This row is later than Kircher’s plate and much later than the letter classification.

Crowley keeps Lovers and Gemini but interprets the card through analysis, union, and alchemical combination. The sword gloss and Lovers title generate tension rather than a simple romantic equation.
