The letter name is commonly glossed “water.” Kircher places it between Geburah and Hod; the Golden Dawn later aligns it with Water and The Hanged Man. Each statement belongs to a different historical layer.

Mem among the mother letters

Sefer Yetzirah groups Mem with Aleph and Shin as the three mothers. In the commonly printed scheme they organize air, water, and fire. The book does not place Mem on the later Geburah to Hod connection or attach a tarot trump to it.

Mem is one of the three mothers and is associated with water in the commonly printed scheme. Sefer Yetzirah does not attach the Hanged Man or draw the Geburah–Hod segment.

From Geburah to Hod

Kircher sets Mem vertically on the left pillar from the severe fifth sphere to Hod. The descent stays within the restrictive side, giving suspension and reflection a later structural setting.

Geburah contributes strength or might, while Hod contributes splendor or majesty.

The Golden Dawn correspondence gives path 23 the attribution Water and the tarot trump The Hanged Man. This row is later than Kircher’s plate and much later than the letter classification.

Crowley retains Hanged Man and Water. His interpretations intensify baptism, reversal, sacrifice, and suspension, all later developments around the mother-letter element.

What later readers make of the path

Modern readings emphasize surrender, altered perspective, or force dissolved into understanding. Water supplies medium; the vertical line supplies descent; the card supplies inversion.
