Past • Present • Future is a timeline spread, but its three positions do more than divide events into tenses. The first card asks which earlier influence remains active. The second establishes the conditions visible now. The third shows a direction that could develop if those conditions continue. Reading the cards as a chain keeps the spread grounded in change rather than three disconnected predictions.
The future position is deliberately phrased as “Where this may lead.” That wording protects the most useful feature of the layout: feedback. If the possible direction is welcome, the reader can identify what supports it. If it is unwelcome, the first two cards can show which influence or present choice needs attention. The third card is therefore a scenario to examine, not a sentence already imposed.

Use the timeline after a move, role change, or ending to see what has carried over, what the new situation actually contains, and which direction current choices support.

Look for an earlier experience, decision, expectation, or condition whose effect is visible in the present. The card does not need to describe the oldest cause. It identifies the part of the past that matters to this question now, including skills and support as well as unfinished difficulty.
- 2Where you are now
Treat this as the hinge of the spread. Describe current facts, pressures, resources, and choices before judging them. Compare the card with the first position to see what has continued and what has already changed.
- 3Where this may lead
Read the image as a conditional direction produced by the first two cards. Ask what would make this scenario more or less likely and which part remains within your influence. The card may describe a process or atmosphere rather than a single event.
How to read the pattern
Give each card a one-sentence tense statement: “This still influences me …,” “Right now …,” and “If this continues ….” Keeping the grammar visible prevents the past card from becoming a prediction or the future card from being read as a settled fact.
Trace one element across all three cards. It might be a suit, number, posture, landscape, or direction of movement. Repetition can show continuity, while contrast can mark a break. Use the visual pattern to ask a question rather than declaring that symbols always carry one fixed message.
Return to the present card last. It is the place where inherited influence meets available choice. Write one condition that supports the future shown and one condition that could redirect it. This turns the reading into a practical timeline you can revisit.

Suppose you are considering whether a demanding work pattern is becoming sustainable after a recent change in responsibilities.

The burdened figure can represent a period of carrying too many duties without renegotiating them. That earlier habit still matters if you continue to accept each new task as an individual obligation.

Justice shifts attention to terms, evidence, and proportion. The present hinge may be a formal review of responsibilities, a need to document workload, or a decision about what a fair arrangement would require.

The movement away from rough water suggests a gradual transition rather than instant relief. If the present review produces clearer limits, the pattern may lead toward a calmer workload with some unfinished adjustment.
Putting the reading together. The timeline does not say that improvement will arrive on its own. It shows an old pattern of overextension meeting a present opportunity for fairer structure. The future becomes more plausible if the reader documents the load, proposes specific changes, and checks whether those changes are honored.

No. It describes one direction supported by the conditions visible in the reading. Choices, new information, and other people can alter that direction. Read it with an explicit “if this continues” clause.
How far into the future does the third card reach?
Set a useful horizon in the question before drawing, such as the next month or the next phase of a project. Without a time frame, the card is better read as the next direction than as a dated event.
What if the past and present cards seem reversed?
Keep the position labels fixed. The past card may describe an influence that feels vivid now, while the present card may show the process of leaving it. Explain the relationship between them instead of moving the cards to fit a preferred story.
