In the 1912 Equinox article, the twelve Calls after the four principal tablets fill the remaining combinations of Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. The sequence is a printed reception of Dee’s Keys.

Why there are twelve in this group

The 1912 introduction says the remaining twelve Keys correspond to the lesser angles of four terrestrial tablets, in the order Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. Each tablet receives three additional subangles because the like-with-like subangle was already assigned one of Calls three through six. This yields a legible four-by-four scheme across Calls three through eighteen. It is a compact explanation of the later apparatus, not a claim that each angle is written as a label on Dee’s autograph folio.

The printed English texts are not simply sixteen interchangeable formulae with a changed compass point. Calls seven, eight, and nine move through eastern dwellings, midday pillars, and a western guard. Calls ten through twelve picture a northern oak of thunder, an eagle departing a house of death, and southern lanterns. The images are specific, even when the later table gives them a regular position.

The twelve printed placements

In Crowley’s sequence, Calls seven through nine are Water of Air, Earth of Air, and Fire of Air. Calls ten through twelve are Air of Water, Earth of Water, and Fire of Water. Calls thirteen through fifteen are Air of Earth, Water of Earth, and Fire of Earth. Calls sixteen through eighteen are Air of Fire, Water of Fire, and Earth of Fire. The order of words matters: Water of Air names a different position from Air of Water.

The English images for the final six differ again. The thirteenth brings swords of the south; the fourteenth seats of fury and age. The fifteenth through eighteenth use a series of flames, ending with comfort and truth. The Angelical wording, Dee’s associated English, and edition-specific punctuation can yield different translation readings even when the call title is unchanged.

An edition is part of the answer

The Equinox issue is a 1912 publication, and the IAPSOP record warns that its online issue files are modern reconstructions whose accuracy it does not independently certify. The broad printed pattern is clear, but a doubtful letter or variant remains uncertain without the physical edition or an independently collated text.

Sloane MS 3191 remains the earlier manuscript reference for the Keys. Its catalogue offers shelfmark, folios, and dates but no line-by-line transcription in the catalogue display. Dee’s exact spelling belongs to the manuscript or a checked edition, while the elemental assignments belong to the later 1912 system. An English image or motif from that printing cannot establish the wording of an individual Angelical line.
