John Dee’s manuscript calls the corpus the forty-eight Angelical Keys. The familiar list of nineteen counts eighteen fixed verbal forms and one form applied to thirty named Aethyrs. This index lets you find each Call while keeping the 1584 manuscript, 1912 printed English, and later elemental assignments distinct.

Why a manuscript of forty-eight Keys becomes a list of nineteen Calls

The British Library places the 48 Claves Angelicae at Sloane MS 3191, folios 1r–13r, and dates their reception from 13 April to 13 July 1584. Christopher Whitby describes eighteen fixed invocations and another formula applied to each of thirty Aethyrs. The verbal-pattern count is eighteen plus one; the application count is eighteen plus thirty. A list headed “nineteen” and Dee’s heading “forty-eight” can therefore both be accurate when their counting rules are stated.

The Aethyrs and their ninety-one earthly parts have a related but separate manuscript context in the Liber Scientiae. The thirty Aethyr names and source guide traces that context. The 48 versus 19 article explains the manuscript count in more detail.

Dee’s Keys and the 1912 edition

The ordinal sequence begins with Dee’s autograph book. The concise motifs and tablet labels here come from the 1912 article on the forty-eight Calls in The Equinox. That publication interleaves the Calls with ritual directions and a scheme of elemental tablets. It is a witness to influential later reception, not a substitute for every folio of Dee’s book. Exact spellings and phonetics vary with the edition and its editorial method.

The Equinox editor acknowledged unresolved variant readings. IAPSOP describes its online issue as a modern reconstruction and does not independently certify every transcription detail. The versions and pronunciation guide explains how to compare the layers.
