How Shadbala Strength Is Calculated

Shadbala means six categories, not six simple numbers

Ṣaḍbala groups planetary strength under Sthāna, Dig, Kāla, Cheṣṭā, Naisargika, and Dṛk Bala. The first category is itself a sum of Uccha, Saptavargaja, Ojayugma-rāśy-aṃśa, Kendrādi, and Drekkāṇa Bala. Kāla also contains several timed inputs. A table with one number per category therefore rests on many more than six calculations.

Current high-visibility Vedic chart services expose both Shadabala and Bhavabala beside the D1 and divisional charts. Drik Panchang's current Kundali surface places both in its chart navigation; the AstroSage sample Vedic report prints component and house tables together. Their presence shows what visitors expect, but their totals cannot validate a different engine unless the ayanāṃśa, house midpoints, source edition, and every sub-rule agree.

Uccha Bala anchors

At deep debility the distance is 0° and the strength is 0. At the opposite point, deep exaltation, the shortest distance is 180° and the strength is 60. Between them, the value changes continuously.

Drekkāṇa witness choice

This calculator follows the R. Santhanam English translation of BPHS 27.6: male planets Sun, Mars, and Jupiter receive 15 in the first 10°; female Moon and Venus in the second 10°; neutral Mercury and Saturn in the third 10°. Other editions and later manuals place neutral planets in the middle and female planets in the final third. The output is therefore reproducible under the named witness, not presented as an edition-free universal.

Worked example: Sun at 0° Aries, Aries Lagna

The Sun is 170° from its 10° Libra debility point, so Uccha Bala is 170 ÷ 3 = 56.67. Aries is an odd rāśi and 0° Aries transforms to an odd Aries Navāṃśa, giving 15 + 15 = 30 Ojayugma virūpas. The Sun is in house 1, a Kendra, so Kendrādi is 60. It is in the first 10° third and is classed male, giving 15 Drekkāṇa Bala.

For Sun and Mars, the Dig zero point is the fourth-house direction. With 0° Aries Lagna that is 0° Cancer, 90° from this Sun, so Dig Bala is 90 ÷ 3 = 30. Naisargika Bala for the Sun is always 60. These numbers are not added into a Shadbala total because Saptavargaja, Kāla, Cheṣṭā, and Dṛk remain absent.

Why the total is withheld

• Saptavargaja Bala needs dignity across D1, D2, D3, D7, D9, D12, and D30 plus an explicit friendship and Mūlatrikoṇa convention.
• Kāla Bala combines day/night, lunar phase, thirds of the day or night, weekday, Hora, month, year, Ayana, and sometimes war adjustments under edition-dependent procedures.
• Cheṣṭā Bala is not a simple direct-versus-retrograde flag. The classical calculation uses mean and true positions or a documented motion-state implementation.
• Dṛk Bala needs degree-weighted aspects and an explicit benefic/malefic classification. The site's full-sign graha dṛṣṭi directory is not a substitute.

A required-rūpa percentage and a strongest-to-weakest ranking require the omitted values. Printing either would imply a precision the engine does not have.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Rāhu and Ketu absent?

The chapter's Shadbala table applies to the seven classical grahas from Sun through Saturn. The nodes are not silently assigned natural, directional, or total strengths here.

Why can another program disagree?

First compare the exact birth instant, historical offset, ayanāṃśa, Lagna, house convention, source translation, Navāṃśa boundary, and Drekkāṇa ordering. A small longitude difference near a discrete boundary can change a component by 15 or more virūpas.

Does a high component mean a favorable prediction?

No. This is a numerical rule inside an astrological tradition. Strength, beneficence, house rulership, timing, and a real-world outcome are different questions.
