The First Enochian Call: Justice, Sun, and the Tablet of Union

The First Call’s justice and celestial imagery precede its 1912 Tablet of Union label, absent as such from Dee’s manuscript.

The First Call speaks through a voice of divine rule, then turns from an account of created order to a request for disclosure. Its Spirit-tablet label belongs to the 1912 printed arrangement.

Justice is the governing image

In the 1912 English rendering, the speaker claims authority above a wrathful firmament and introduces the sun and moon as striking sources of light. Clothing, hands, seats, and a rod then turn cosmic rank into the imagery of a court. The ark of knowledge is given within the same sequence. These are related claims of sovereignty, not a list of interchangeable astrological symbols. The passage links the addressees’ position to a law, a ruler, and an expected response.

The English Call moves from that description toward its appeal for the addressees to reveal mysteries. This turn matters more than the bare title “First Key”: the opening asserts an order, while the ending asks for an encounter within it. A search excerpt that only calls the text an invocation misses its sun and moon contrast, its legal vocabulary, and the way knowledge appears as a grant of authority. This reading paraphrases the 1912 English rather than claiming a new translation of Angelical words.

Where the Spirit-tablet label comes from

The original issue prints the Angelical First Key and starts its English rendering on page 103; the rendering continues on page 104. Immediately below the Angelical text, a bracket says the Key invokes the whole Tablet of Spirit. That placement gives a concrete source for the familiar “Tablet of Union” association. The article also places the Call inside a staged ceremonial sequence. Both the bracket and the surrounding sequence are features of the 1912 publication.

The British Library instead catalogues Dee’s forty-eight Angelical Keys together at Sloane MS 3191, folios 1r–13r, with a reception span from April to July 1584. Its public record does not assign this specific Call to a tablet or transcribe its individual folio. The later assignment can be studied without treating it as an autograph heading. Calling the Call “Spirit” is therefore a useful description of the printed system, provided the edition is named.

What the page can and cannot settle

A note attached to the First Key in the 1912 issue acknowledges that comparison of manuscripts leaves variant readings. This is a warning against treating a web copy as the sole recoverable wording. The printed Angelical and English passages are valuable historical witnesses, but their punctuation and editorial choices have to be identified before an exact quotation or pronunciation claim. The English imagery described here can be checked on printed pages 103–104 of that issue.

The First Call also provides a useful benchmark for the next two. The Second shifts toward winds and a building, while the Third names a circle and twelve kingdoms. Their distinct motifs should not disappear into one generic “elemental invocation” description. Dee’s manuscript establishes the earlier collection; the 1912 issue shows a later reader’s English rendering and ritual placement. Keeping those layers apart makes the First Call intelligible without promising an effect from reading it.
