Start with the Ascendant
The simple annual profection begins at the sign containing the natal Ascendant. From birth until the first birthday, that sign is the active first place. On the first birthday, the next sign becomes the second place. On the second birthday, the third sign becomes active. Count one sign per completed year of life; after twelve years the cycle starts again.
A worked example: Cancer rising
A person born with Cancer rising begins at age zero in Cancer, the first place, with the Moon as traditional ruler. At age one, Leo and the second place are active, with the Sun as ruler. At age two, Virgo and the third place are active, with Mercury as ruler. At age twelve the sequence returns to Cancer and the first place. At age 25, the second place and Leo repeat. The sequence identifies a symbolic focus for an age; it does not predict what will happen in that year.
What is the lord of the year?
The traditional ruler of the active sign is commonly called the lord or time lord of the year. Traditional rulership uses seven visible planets: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio; Venus, Taurus and Libra; Mercury, Gemini and Virgo; the Moon, Cancer; the Sun, Leo; Jupiter, Sagittarius and Pisces; Saturn, Capricorn and Aquarius. Birthday boundaries and uncertainty
The annual sign changes on the civil birthday shown in the birth record, using the target date in that same civil calendar. Some practitioners align a year with the exact solar return instead; that moment can differ from the birthday date. The calculator states its convention so that a boundary result can be interpreted accordingly. For February 29 births, the form lets you choose whether a non-leap-year anniversary falls on February 28 or March 1.
When birth time is unknown, the Ascendant is unknown. A Sun sign cannot substitute for it. You can still use the guide to understand the cycle, but an individual annual ruler should be withheld until the rising sign can be supported. Scope of the method
Historical profection systems include other starting points, directed degrees, monthly subdivisions, and different ways to connect the result with solar returns and transits. This calculator implements only the common annual Ascendant-based Whole Sign count. It presents no event claims or personal forecast. Use it as a transparent reference for study and comparison with sources.
