How Ashtakavarga Bindus Are Counted

The seven rows and eight references

The name aṣṭa points to eight contributors, not eight recipient planets. The recipient BAV rows are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. Each row receives zero or one bindu in each sign from Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Lagna. Rāhu and Ketu do not enter this particular seven-row set. A separate Lagna Ashtakavarga exists in some treatments; it is not an eighth row in the raw SAV presented here.

We transcribed the benefic-place lists from Varāhamihira’s Bṛhat Jātaka chapter 9, in N. Chidambaram Aiyar’s English translation. Every listed position below counts the source’s natal sidereal sign as 1 and then moves forward through the zodiac. Repeated positions in a row can come from different contributors, each supplying one bindu.

Each cell is a list of one-based positions. For example, Sun’s BAV receives points from natal Venus in Venus’s 6th, 7th, and 12th signs. The row totals remain constant even when the eight natal signs move.

Worked counting example

Imagine all eight references in Aries. In the Sun BAV, Aries is the first sign from each reference. The Sun, Mars, and Saturn lists include position 1; the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Lagna lists do not. Aries therefore has 3 bindus in the Sun BAV. Taurus has position 2 from every reference: Sun, Mars, and Saturn contribute, so Taurus also has 3 Sun bindus. In the Mercury BAV for Aries, natal Mars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, and Lagna include position 1, yielding 5. The calculator’s cell audit exposes this same arithmetic for any entered signs.

After making seven BAV rows, add vertically for each sign. The twelve SAV values then sum to 337 with this witness, because the fixed BAV totals are 48 + 49 + 39 + 54 + 56 + 52 + 39. A 337 total alone cannot prove every cell was entered correctly: moving or exchanging a bindu can preserve the total. The per-cell rules are shown above so readers can inspect more than a checksum.

Rāśi score versus house label

Bindus are assigned to the twelve zodiacal rāśis. A house number can be added as a reading aid by counting Whole Sign houses from Lagna. For a Leo Lagna, Leo is house 1 and Virgo house 2; for a Scorpio Lagna, Leo is house 10. The bindu assigned to Leo does not change merely because the Lagna changes. Lagna also acts as one of the eight sources, however, so changing the natal Lagna sign can change bindus throughout the table.

The calculator uses the same approximate Lahiri sidereal positions as the site’s D1 rāśi chart. Its historical offset input is supplied by the visitor, and it does not reconstruct time-zone history. Near a 30° sign boundary, a small birth-time, offset, ephemeris, or ayanāṃśa difference can alter a graha’s sign and therefore several BAV cells. Lagna changes faster than most planetary signs and should be based on a reliable birth time.

What raw bindus do and do not say

Classical texts discuss using bindu counts when considering planetary passages through signs. The raw count is one input to that tradition; it is not a measured probability, a destiny rating, a substitute for the complete chart, or evidence that a particular event will occur. This calculator stops at the arithmetic. It does not label counts as good or bad, issue health or money forecasts, or pretend that “337” measures a person’s worth.

Some Ashtakavarga methods apply trikoṇa śodhana and ekādhipatya śodhana reductions and then compute other quantities. Their outputs will not match this page’s unreduced row totals. Different textual witnesses also contain individual cell variants. For instance, the commonly circulated English Sārāvalī chapter 53 prints only five Lagna positions for Saturn, whereas the Bṛhat Jātaka witness used here gives six, including the sixth sign. Our source choice and 337 checksum are explicit so results can be compared honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Is SAV the sum of BAV and a separate Lagna row?

Here, no. SAV adds the seven graha BAV rows. Lagna is already one contributor inside every row. Adding a separate Lagna Ashtakavarga would produce a different convention and total.

Can I calculate from signs without a date?

Yes. Once the correct sidereal signs of all seven grahas and Lagna are known, the rules need no exact degree. The manual entry form lets you inspect that case. An unknown Lagna should not be guessed silently.

Why does another calculator show a different value?

Check the ayanāṃśa, source birth time and UTC offset, Lagna sign, whether the grid is raw or reduced, whether its rows are rāśi or house ordered, and which textual bindu table it follows. Near a sign boundary, the D1 sign itself may differ.

Does a higher bindu count guarantee an outcome?

No. A bindu count is a traditional bookkeeping rule, and this page presents it as such. The source text discusses interpretation, but the calculator does not convert counts into event claims.
