Ayanamsa names the angular separation between the tropical equinox-based origin and a selected sidereal origin. Modern ephemerides commonly obtain a sidereal ecliptic longitude by applying that dated offset to a tropical longitude. The result depends on which origin and precession convention the calculator chooses. A chart should print its ayanamsa name and date alongside its longitudes.
The basic arithmetic
For an illustrative arithmetic example, suppose a body is at 15° tropical Aries (absolute longitude 15°) and a chosen dated ayanamsa is 24°. Subtracting gives −9°, then adding 360° wraps it to 351°: 21° sidereal Pisces. The example uses round numbers, not an ephemeris reading for a particular date.
Because precession accumulates, one ayanamsa value cannot st, and for every year. The offset itself can also vary among named conventions. If a planet sits within the difference between two choices and a sign boundary, the printed sidereal sign may change.
Why the Lahiri name appears so often
N. C. Lahiri served on India’s Calendar Reform Committee, and the Positional Astronomy Centre’s history identifies him as the first officer in charge of the almanac unit. The Centre’s Rashtriya Panchang publishes the ayanamsa it uses and explains its fixed initial-point convention. These sources establish a widely used reference; they do not imply that all Indian astrologers share one chart setting.

Compare one setting at a time. A discrepancy in every planet’s longitude of roughly the same amount points first to a zodiac or ayanamsa difference; an isolated discrepancy may have a different cause. This is a diagnostic suggestion, not proof of a particular software error.
