Open Ending & Next Step

Ending & Next Step distinguishes a finished phase from what it taught, what remains, a final action, and what comes next. It is helpful at the close of a project or relationship when the practical work of ending is still underway.

A useful question for this spread

What has ended, and what can I take forward without denying the ending?

The question can be made more specific to your circumstances before you draw. Keep the wording open enough for an unexpected card and grounded enough to connect the cards to something you can observe or decide.

The 5 positions, in order

The position labels below follow this version of the spread. Keep the order visible while reading so a compelling card does not cause its place to change after the draw.

  1. 1
    What ends

Answer this prompt from the image and the situation you actually know.

  2. 2
    What you learned

Answer this prompt from the image and the situation you actually know.

  3. 3
    What remains

Answer this prompt from the image and the situation you actually know.

  4. 4
    Final action

Turn the card into one observable step rather than a fixed prediction.

  5. 5
    What comes next

Answer this prompt from the image and the situation you actually know.

How to read the pattern

What you learned should not be used to justify a painful experience. What remains can include a skill, friendship, or obligation. Final action may be administrative, emotional, or relational; What comes next is a possibility to explore, not a replacement for mourning.

After looking at the cards individually, compare the first position with the final one. Notice what changed in between and which cards complicate a simple story. A repeated suit or image can focus attention, but its meaning still depends on the question and the position.

An example reading

The World in What ends might mark completion. Eight of Pentacles in What you learned could reflect a craft built over time. Justice in Final action may call for settling terms clearly, while Page of Cups in What comes next allows room for a new interest.

This example shows how a card can open a question without proving a hidden fact or fixing the outcome. The next useful step is to compare the idea with the real situation and revise it when new information arrives.

Ending & Next Step tarot spread FAQ

How many cards are in the Ending & Next Step tarot spread?

This version uses 5 cards in a fixed order: What ends, What you learned, What remains, and 2 later positions ending with What comes next. The numbered diagram and position list use the same sequence, so the role of a card stays stable while you interpret it.

What question works best for the Ending & Next Step spread?

Begin with “What has ended, and what can I take forward without denying the ending?” and replace any broad wording with the situation, decision, or time period you actually want to examine. The spread works best as a structured reflection rather than proof of another person’s private thoughts or a guaranteed prediction.

How should I compare What ends with What comes next?

Treat What ends as the opening frame and What comes next as the closing frame. Use What remains and the other middle positions to explain what connects them instead of jumping directly from the first card to a fixed outcome.
