Read with the Career Direction spread

Review your skills, values, opportunities, and limits before you make a career decision.

Open Career Direction

Career Direction is most useful when a job title alone cannot answer the decision. Its five positions place current work next to a skill, a value, a constraint, and a next step. The spread can clarify what to investigate before accepting or leaving a role.

A useful question for this spread

Which career step fits my skills, values, and current limits?

The question can be made more specific to your circumstances before you draw. Keep the wording open enough for an unexpected card and grounded enough to connect the cards to something you can observe or decide.

The 5 positions, in order

The position labels below follow this version of the spread. Keep the order visible while reading so a compelling card does not cause its place to change after the draw.

  1. 1
    Current work

Use this card to establish the question’s starting point.

  2. 2
    Core skill

Connect this card with its neighbors while keeping this position’s label fixed.

  3. 3
    Value to honor

Ask what matters here and how that value appears in behavior.

  4. 4
    Constraint

Name the difficulty precisely enough to see what can be addressed.

  5. 5
    Next step

Read this as a possibility or action that can change with new information.

How to read the pattern

A strength and a value are different: you may be good at work that no longer fits what matters to you. Read Constraint without shame; time, money, caregiving, and access are real conditions. Next step should be a practical test, such as a conversation, application, portfolio sample, or budget.

After looking at the cards individually, compare the first position with the final one. Notice what changed in between and which cards complicate a simple story. A repeated suit or image can focus attention, but its meaning still depends on the question and the position.

An example reading

Eight of Pentacles in Core skill may point to patient craft. Justice in Value to honor could bring fairness into focus, while Two of Pentacles in Constraint names divided time. Page of Wands in Next step may suggest exploring a role through one low-risk project.

This example shows how a card can open a question without proving a hidden fact or fixing the outcome. The next useful step is to compare the idea with the real situation and revise it when new information arrives.

Career Direction tarot spread FAQ

How many cards are in the Career Direction tarot spread?

This version uses 5 cards in a fixed order: Current work, Core skill, Value to honor, and 2 later positions ending with Next step. The numbered diagram and position list use the same sequence, so the role of a card stays stable while you interpret it.

What question works best for the Career Direction spread?

Begin with “Which career step fits my skills, values, and current limits?” and replace any broad wording with the situation, decision, or time period you actually want to examine. The spread works best as a structured reflection rather than proof of another person’s private thoughts or a guaranteed prediction.

How should I compare Current work with Next step?

Treat Current work as the opening frame and Next step as the closing frame. Use Value to honor and the other middle positions to explain what connects them instead of jumping directly from the first card to a fixed outcome.
