Mathers assigns red and iron to this planetary group. The crop documents his printed linework; it does not reproduce the color or material described elsewhere in the edition.

What Mathers’s caption claims

The first Mars figure is a general invocation of spirits placed under that planet.

Within the Mars collection, this places figure 25 among themes of conflict, healing, defense, coercion, and weather.

Inscription, names, and script

No biblical verse is identified: No separate verse is printed around this figure.

The rim names Madimiel, Bartzachiah, Eschiel, and Ithuriel.

How the diagram is organized

The visible core is a small central crossing. Around it, eight radii terminate in Mars characters. At the edge, four angel names enclose the wheel.

Mathers plate and witness differences

Mathers supplies four transliterations but no verse. The figure is therefore best compared through placement and character form, not through an assumed scriptural caption.

Plate V is an artifact of Mathers’s 1889 arrangement. His preface and final note say that he compared differing manuscripts and restored difficult Hebrew and magical characters. Sloane 2731 and Lansdowne 1203 remain distinct manuscript objects; this printed crop should not stand in for either one.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A diagram reading of figure 25

Read the four names as the stable outer coordinate system, then compare the eight inner terminals. The paired rhythm, four names outside and eight characters inside, creates ordered multiplicity without a narrative scene.
