Tropical zodiac · 12:00 UTC each day · 1800–2100. The south node is opposite the north node.

Mean and true nodes

The mean node smooths the Moon’s orbital motion. The true node uses the instantaneous lunar orbit and can briefly move forward. They are different calculations, and their positions need not match on a given day.

The mean node is shown in the mean ecliptic of date; the true node uses the true ecliptic of date. Small differences from other ephemerides can also reflect lunar models, time scales, and coordinate conventions. Chiron is not included because this calculator has no licensed local Chiron ephemeris.

Method and limits

True and mean positions

The true north node is calculated from the instantaneous geocentric Moon position and velocity relative to the true ecliptic of date using Astronomy Engine 2.1.19. The mean north node follows the Meeus lunar mean ascending-node polynomial in the mean ecliptic and equinox of date. They can differ on the same day, so each table column names its method.

The south node and motion

The south node is placed exactly 180° from its corresponding north node. A motion column describes whether the true north node moved forward or backward over a centered one-day interval. The true node can briefly move direct even though its long-term movement is retrograde.

Using the date-range table

Choose 7, 30, or 90 consecutive dates. Every row is calculated at 12:00 UTC, making it a consistent daily reference rather than an exact birth moment. Download the CSV to compare dates in a spreadsheet. The supported range is 1800–2100; Chiron is not included in this local calculation.
