Sweetening changes how an encounter is carried. Love work changes affection or desire. Confusing the two can turn a request for civility into a claim upon the heart.

Marek wants the woman across the antique aisle to stop greeting him like an enemy. By the third softened conversation, he decides her new warmth must be hidden desire. Then Lio says, very kindly, that she still does not want dinner.
Sweetening spell versus love spell is a choice between different verbs. Sweetening may soften tone, reduce hostility, improve hearing, or make an exchange more generous. Love work alters affection, attraction, longing, attachment, or reciprocity.
The first can create conditions in which truth is easier to say. It cannot be treated as proof that the truth will become romantic.

Ending hostility does not create romance
Lio’s anger is rooted in Marek repeatedly blocking her customers’ view with tall cabinets. The conflict is real, local, and capable of resolution without changing either person’s heart.
If the relevant anger is directed at the person nearest her in the adjoining stall, Marek can cast Cool the Anger Nearest Home and end Lio’s anger toward him. A calmer exchange may permit a new floor plan; it does not convert her boundary into flirtation.
Sweetening is successful when the encounter becomes more workable, even if the romantic answer remains no.

Marek mistakes softened treatment for an altered heart
Suppose two antique dealers share a narrow indoor market aisle.
After weeks of sharp disputes, Lio begins listening, laughing, and helping Marek move one cabinet. He assumes the sweetening revealed attraction. In fact, the reduced anger simply lets her state the same refusal without contempt.

Lio’s kindness is genuine and her refusal is unchanged. The sweetening did not fail. Marek changed its success condition after the result arrived, asking civility to testify about desire.
03 / WHEN THE WRONG SPELL TOUCHED THE HEART
Repair begins by restoring the original emotional ground
Marek’s later red-ribbon working crosses from sweetening into love magic and alters Lio’s feelings without resolving the market dispute. The two operations now need to be disentangled.
Lio can cast Restore the Untouched Heart and return her feelings to exactly what they were before the love spell touched them. From that restored ground, any civility, attraction, annoyance, or refusal belongs to her again.
Undoing the love work does not require restoring hostility. Tone and feeling can be repaired separately because they were changed by different operations.
04 / THE CHOICE BEFORE THE WORK
Ask what evidence would count if romance never appeared
If respectful conversation, fair hearing, and reduced anger would satisfy the aim even without attraction, the work belongs to sweetening. If success requires changed romantic feeling, it belongs to love magic.
This test prevents escalation by disappointment. A sweetened no remains a successful change in manner and a valid refusal. A love spell should be judged by affection, not by whether conflict briefly quiets.
