A cabinet of keys is useless if every key is asked to perform the same miracle. Road-opening ingredients need separate offices: one clears debris, one reveals the hidden route, one quickens movement, one attracts what should travel, and one holds the threshold after it appears.
Materia is not a pile of favorable correspondences. Texture, volatility, direction, durability, and placement create an argument. A bright flame may reveal without attracting; a key may define access without clearing what blocks it.

THE TURN
The most traditional-looking ingredient is the least useful. Daro must create a passage where none remains.

Opening a lock and creating a passage are different powers
A key presumes a lock. Road dust presumes a route. Daro’s wall offers neither, so piling more key-shaped materia only repeats the wrong diagnosis.
Because the warehouse wall preserves neither lock nor passage, Daro can cast The Door No Wall Remembers and make the missing threshold real again. Attraction toward the orchard would only gather travelers before a blank wall; the new door gives movement somewhere to cross.
Once the opening exists, iron can hold its frame and the recovered path dust can reconnect it to remembered traffic. Ingredients gain coherence after the correct operation is named.
03 / ATTRACTION NEEDS A DESTINATION
Drawing materia cannot help what has nowhere to arrive
Only after the gate exists does attraction become useful. The orchard’s lost volunteers, forgotten grants, and missed harvest partnerships now have a threshold they can cross.
Daro can cast The Doorstep of Forsaken Fortune to draw lost fortunes and missed opportunities to that new door. Its attracting office follows clearing and creation; used earlier, every arriving chance would have struck the same blank wall.
This sequence is the central lesson of road-opening ingredients. Clear before quickening. Reveal before attracting. Create before holding.
04 / READ THE FINISHED ROAD
Success appears as ordered material consequences
Light identifies the seam. The spell creates the door. Iron holds its edge. Path dust reconnects it to place. Volunteers and opportunity can finally arrive. No ingredient claims the whole result.
The best road-opening materia reads like a sentence whose verbs occur in the right order. Remove one office and the passage may appear but fail to remain, attract but fail to admit, or move without knowing where.
