A protective poppet is a represented person held in another’s care. Its likeness creates address; its custody creates responsibility. The poppet should defend named capacities without becoming a substitute body through which someone else governs the person’s life.
Protection is therefore relational: link, scope, guardian, witness, consent, and return must agree about who owns the represented future.

A guardian protects a student whose dreams deliver commands in her mother’s voice
Suppose boarding student Esme begins waking with instructions to leave class, forget assignments, and meet an unknown figure at the river gate. The commands arrive in dreams spoken with her mother Jo’s exact voice.
Jo makes a protective poppet representing Esme, but refuses to decide Esme’s friendships or movements through it. The named scope is narrower: guard waking choice, restful sleep, clear attention, and recognition of the stolen voice.

THE VERDICT
The poppet’s task is not to keep Esme obedient at school. It is to prevent supernatural commands from occupying the capacities she needs to choose for herself.

A dream may be experienced without becoming an order
Esme remembers each dream clearly, but the command takes hold only when she wakes. Jo can cast Ward the Waking Mind from Dream Orders and prevent planted instructions from gaining authority upon waking.
The protection does not erase dreams or forbid interpretation. It restores the boundary between image and action.
The poppet represents that boundary through a sleeping likeness whose hands remain open: experience may arrive, while obedience remains unclaimed.
03 / REST IS A PROTECTED CAPACITY
Vigilance should not become the guardian’s permanent victory
After resisting the orders, Esme begins waking every hour to check the corridor. The immediate danger weakens while exhaustion becomes its successor.
She can cast The Restless Night Stilled and protect her sleep from restlessness. Rest is not passive exposure; it is a capacity the ward returns.
A protective poppet that keeps its subject eternally alert has preserved fear rather than freedom.
04 / CUSTODY MUST REMAIN REVOCABLE
The represented person retains authority over the link
Esme supplied the school ribbon and knows where the poppet is kept. She can request its return, alter its scope, or end Jo’s custody. Those permissions distinguish guardianship from remote control.
Jo does not use the figure to make Esme call home, avoid chosen friends, or follow a path Jo prefers. Maternal fear does not enlarge the ward’s jurisdiction.
The return envelope is therefore as important as the protective symbols. It gives the representation a road back to its owner.
05 / VERIFY AT THE PERSON, NOT THE FIGURE
Changes in the poppet do not outrank lived evidence
A loosened stitch may reflect handling; a faded mark may reflect light. Jo records material changes but asks whether Esme sleeps, chooses, concentrates, and recognizes the copied voice.
The represented person is the primary witness. Interpreting the poppet against Esme’s account would turn sympathy into erasure.
Protection succeeds through restored capacities, not through an object looking dramatically burdened.
06 / THE RETURN OF THE DOUBLE
Guardianship ends when delegated protection is no longer needed
Esme eventually asks for the poppet back. The river-gate commands have stopped, her sleep steadies, and attention returns. Jo sends the figure without treating return as rejection.
Esme keeps the ribbon and dismantles the remaining likeness from a position of ownership. The protection’s final act is to surrender its representation.
A clean poppet ward leaves the person more fully themselves and the guardian less necessary.
