Geomancy Divination: How Sixteen Figures Build a Judgment

A geomantic figure has four levels, traditionally associated with head, neck, body, and feet or with elemental rows. Each level contains one point or two. Because each row has two possible states, there are sixteen possible figures. Via is four single points; Populus is four pairs. Fortuna Major, Fortuna Minor, Acquisitio, Amissio, Conjunctio, Carcer, Puella, Puer, Laetitia, Tristitia, Albus, Rubeus, Caput Draconis, and Cauda Draconis complete the set.

Those Latin names are not neutral translations of universal pictures. Textual traditions disagree about some planetary, zodiacal, and evaluative correspondences; even Puer and Puella can be assigned differently between authorities. A reader should adopt one named table for a reading rather than silently combine whichever attributions produce the preferred answer.

The traditional operator makes sixteen rows of points without counting while the hand moves. Each row is then counted only for parity: odd becomes one point and even becomes two. Rows one through four form the first Mother from top to bottom; the next four make the second, and so on.

The four Daughters are not fresh random figures. Daughter One takes the top row of each Mother. Daughter Two takes each Mother’s second row; Daughters Three and Four take the third and fourth rows. This transposition is easy to perform and easy to corrupt, so copying each binary row matters more than artistic dots.

Addition then generates the remaining shield. Combine two figures row by row: equal states produce two points, unequal states one. In binary language, odd plus odd and even plus even are even; odd plus even is odd. Mothers One and Two make Niece One; Mothers Three and Four make Niece Two. Daughters One and Two make Niece Three; Daughters Three and Four make Niece Four. The first pair of Nieces makes the Right Witness, the second pair makes the Left Witness, and the Witnesses make the Judge.

This ancestry matters ethically. A claim that guilt or inherited destiny has appeared cannot float free of the actual figures. The working severs precisely what the chart cannot prove: descent may reproduce a figure, but descendants are not evidence of an ancestor’s debt.

The shield chart displays derivation. It lets the reader inspect how the Judge arose and compare the two Witnesses that feed it. A house chart performs another task: it places figures into twelve topical houses analogous to astrological houses, such as self, resources, siblings and messages, home, work, partnership, shared assets, and journeys. Historical manuals differ over house assignment procedures and interpretive priorities, so “the geomantic method” is not one frictionless recipe.

For a question about accepting employment, the first house can describe the querent, the second their resources, the sixth the labor conditions, and the tenth the office or reputation. The Judge gives a synthesis, not a substitute for those places. A favorable Judge cannot make an exploitative sixth-house testimony disappear.

Repetition is also testimony. A figure appearing in several relevant places creates continuity; a figure that passes from one house to another may be read through techniques sometimes called modes of perfection. These advanced judgments belong to a declared lineage. Beginners gain more by tracing the shield correctly and reading a few relevant positions than by stacking every later technique onto one chart.

A Judge considered alone is a headline torn from its argument. In the worked chart, Amissio does not simply mean failure. The Right Witness emphasizes active relinquishment; Populus on the left receives, repeats, or collectivizes the conditions. Their child describes loss reinforced by an existing field. Change the question to “What should I release?” and the same figure could become favorable.

Some methods add a sixteenth position often called the Reconciler, formed by combining the Judge with the first Mother. It can describe how the judgment meets the querent, but it should not be improvised merely because the Judge disappoints. Likewise, an impossible Judge—one with an odd total number of points—signals a copying or calculation error in common shield practice, not a supernatural anomaly.

Interpretation should move in a disciplined sequence: literal figure; positional office; relationship to parent figures; relevance to the stated time and subject; then a rival reading. For Idris, Amissio may be unacceptable sacrifice or a clean exchange that releases him from stagnant work. Contract language and workload decide between them.

Learned geomancy flourished in Arabic intellectual worlds before Latin translations and adaptations carried it through medieval and early modern Europe. Manuscripts and printed books connect its figures with astrology, elemental theory, houses, timing, spirits, medicine, and judicial questions. Authors reorganized attributions as they transmitted them. A sixteenth-century English reader of Christopher Cattan did not necessarily hold the same table as an Arabic practitioner or the Middle English tradition of Martin of Spain.

The family resemblance is the binary figure set and generative tableau, not a single timeless list of meanings. This matters beyond Europe. Similar binary figure systems occur in African divinatory traditions with their own languages, initiations, authorities, and histories. Resemblance does not authorize folding them all into “Western geomancy” or borrowing sacred offices while erasing practitioners.

A historically alert reader therefore names the working corpus. “I use this figure table and this shield rule” is stronger than claiming every culture agrees. The chart can remain magical while its transmission remains human: copied, translated, disputed, and repaired.

Geomancy is unusually good at exposing its own process. Preserve the original sixteen lines, parity reductions, Mothers, derived figures, and interpretation. If the arithmetic is wrong, correct it before reading. If the question changes, cast a new chart only when the new question is materially different—not because the first Judge was unwelcome.

Close by translating judgment into checks. Amissio asks what is surrendered; Populus asks which collective or established conditions shape that surrender; the repeated Judge asks whether the exchange is acceptable. Idris still needs the contract, budget, references, and an exit plan. The oracle organizes inquiry without impersonating due diligence.
