Guna Milan compares two natal Moon positions using eight named checks. Drik Panchang and Prokerala both describe the 36-point Ashtakoota framework. Our free comparison tool calculates each sidereal Moon rashi, nakshatra, pada, and degree category from a recorded birth moment using an approximate Lahiri ayanamsha. A manual advanced mode keeps the underlying Moon inputs visible for people who already have chart data. It calculates the eight rows with the Saravali/Maitreya published tables; their source pages are licensed CC BY-SA 4.0 and are credited below.

What each row calculates
Varna · 1
Saravali’s Varna table assigns water signs to Brahmin, fire to Kshatriya, air to Vaishya, and earth to Shudra. Its point rule compares an ordered groom column and bride row. These are historically caste terms within the source model, not a statement about anyone’s social status or ability. We show the row solely as one traditional scoring component.
Vashya · 2
The five by five source grid compares quadruped, human, water, lion, and scorpion classes. Some cells depend on which person is in the bride row. Capricorn changes class at sidereal 15°. Saravali’s list omits Sagittarius, so our class assignment uses Drik Panchang’s published split: Sagittarius 0°–15° human, 15°–30° quadruped. When a selected nakshatra spans a 15° split and the degree half is unknown, the result gives a possible total range rather than a made-up exact number.
Tara / Dina · 3
Count birth stars inclusively from A to B around the 27-star cycle, and again from B to A. For each direction, the source rule awards 1.5 unless the count modulo nine is 3, 5, or 7, in which case it awards zero. The two directions add to 0, 1.5, or 3.
Yoni · 4
Each nakshatra maps to one of fourteen traditional animal symbols. The score comes from the full published 14 by 14 Yoni grid, with same-symbol pairs receiving four and other cells receiving 0–3. The source includes Abhijit as a second mongoose association; this calculator uses the standard 27 equal nakshatras and therefore does not offer Abhijit as a separate input.
Graha Maitri · 5
Take the classical lord of each Moon rashi and compare the two lords’ natural relations in both directions. Saravali’s natural friendship table can be asymmetric; its Maitri point table gives 5 for mutual friends or the same lord, 4 for friend and neutral, 3 for both neutral, 2 for friend and enemy, 1 for neutral and enemy, and 0 for mutual enemies. No temporary planetary friendships are applied.
Gana · 6
The 27 stars fall into Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa groups. These are traditional symbolic categories, not labels for a person’s character. The source bride-row by groom-column grid awards 0, 1, 5, or 6 depending on the pairing.
Bhakoot · 7
Count the bride’s Moon sign from the groom’s, inclusive. In the source rule, 2/12, 5/9, and 6/8 sign axes get zero; 1/1, 3/11, 4/10, and 7/7 get seven. We do not silently restore points through a claimed cancellation. A zero here records that table rule only.
Nadi · 8
Each nakshatra belongs to Adi, Madhya, or Antya in the published list. The source awards eight if the two groups differ and zero if they are the same. This is a traditional classification, not a medical test or statement about future children.
Input certainty and interpretation
The Moon crosses a nakshatra boundary about every day, so an estimated time or different ayanamsha can change the birth star and several score rows. A nakshatra can also cross a rashi boundary; our form checks that the entered pair could coexist. Birth-record mode calculates the Moon from a local date and time plus the historical UTC offset, using the site’s approximate Lahiri conversion. It reports the rashi, nakshatra, pada, and exact sign degree before scoring, and flags very close sign or nakshatra boundaries. The form does not infer historical time-zone rules from coordinates. Manual mode remains available when a sidereal Moon placement has already been established.
A 36-point total is an internal score within this table tradition. Source authorities disagree on some point cells and on interpreting doshas, so another calculator can differ without either input being mistyped. The score does not decide a marriage. The source itself cautions against using Ashtakoota as the only consideration in chart matching; people’s choices and circumstances matter beyond the table.
