Choose a rising sign
The Ascendant is the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon at a particular time and location. Its sign is often called a rising sign. These guides treat it as an opening in a birth chart, with a chart ruler and an opposite Descendant, rather than a stand-alone personality label.
Finding your Ascendant
Start with a recorded local birth time, date, and place. The correct historical time zone and daylight saving rule matter; the offset in force today may differ from the one at birth. A calculator uses these inputs to establish the horizon and tropical zodiac degree. If a birth time was rounded or remembered approximately, the rising sign may be uncertain near a boundary. A birth date alone cannot establish it.
The Ascendant is the same astronomical axis even when astrologers choose different house systems, although the treatment of other house cusps can differ. In interpretation, read the Ascendant sign alongside its ruler's placement, any planets near the horizon, the Sun, and the Moon. Avoid using a physical appearance or a familiar-sounding description to reverse-engineer an unknown birth hour.
