A Moon sign is a position in the zodiac. A Moon phase is the changing angular relationship between the Sun and Moon. “Void of course” is an interpretive timing convention based on aspects before a sign change. They answer different questions, even when an almanac prints them together.

Start with a birth record
Use the recorded local time and place when available. The Moon moves fast enough that a date alone may span two zodiac signs. A missing birth hour also changes house placement, while a phase band may stay stable across the whole day.

Moon signs, phases, and void periods
The Moon sign calendars divide apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude into twelve equal tropical sectors of 30°. Their intervals use UTC and mark a sign as active from its listed start until, but excluding, its end. A local clock can show a different date at the same instant. The lunar phase tools use the Sun–Moon longitude difference; their eight broad natal bands are distinct from the exact New, quarter, and Full Moon event times.
The void Moon tables use a stated modern convention: after the Moon’s final exact conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition to the Sun or a planet through Pluto within one tropical sign, the interval continues to the next sign entry. Historical and modern traditions vary in the planets and aspects counted. A void interval is neither an astronomical phase nor a prediction that an action will fail.
