What the phases mean

The four primary lunar phases mark successive 90° differences between the Moon’s and Sun’s geocentric ecliptic longitudes. A new Moon begins the cycle; the first quarter waxes toward the full Moon; the last quarter wanes toward the next new Moon.

The zodiac sign shown here is the Moon’s apparent geocentric tropical position at the exact phase. It is a sky reference, not a personal chart or a prediction. Phase times from different ephemerides may differ slightly because of their lunar models and coordinate conventions. This calendar does not determine local visibility or eclipses.

Method and limits

Four turning points of a lunar cycle

A new Moon occurs at a geocentric conjunction in ecliptic longitude. First quarter follows at 90°, full Moon at 180°, and last quarter at 270°. The cycle continues between these markers, so the calendar reports precise instants rather than assigning one phase to an entire civil day.

Time and zodiac position

All event times are labeled UTC to avoid confusion across time zones. The position beside a phase is the Moon’s apparent geocentric tropical longitude at that instant, expressed as a sign and degree. It is a chart reference; local moonrise, apparent illumination, and weather require different data.

Choose a useful span

Select 30, 90, or 365 days starting within the supported 1800–2100 period. A year view makes the regular rhythm easy to scan; the CSV keeps the timestamps for further study. A phase by itself does not indicate an eclipse, which requires a closer alignment with the Moon’s orbital nodes.
