Across the horizon from the self
The Descendant is the ecliptic degree setting at the western horizon, exactly opposite the Ascendant. That measurable relationship makes the first/seventh axis a clear structural pair in a timed chart. A seventh-house topic can be a spouse, business counterpart, contractual other party, or person encountered directly. Classical horary lists also put open adversaries here. These varied topics share the idea of a specific other, but they do not make every seventh-house planet a prediction about marriage or conflict. Context decides which question is relevant.
The Descendant and the house
In Equal and common quadrant systems, the Descendant is the seventh cusp; in Whole Sign houses it falls within the seventh sign from the rising sign. A planet can be close to the setting angle without occupying the same numbered house in every method. Conversely, a planet can be in house seven without being close to the Descendant degree. Those are separate facts and may be weighted differently by an astrologer. Give the actual zodiac degrees if comparing two chart services or claiming an angular contact.
Use it with a real relationship question
First identify the recorded birth instant and house system, then check the seventh-house sign, its occupied planets, and their aspects. A Venus placement here, for example, is still Venus in its own sign and aspect network; the house adds a topic of close relating rather than a complete character sketch of a future partner. If comparing two people, calculate both charts and inspect the cross-chart positions rather than deriving compatibility from one person’s seventh house alone. Consent and ordinary experience matter more than any astrological label.
No partner can be inferred from a cusp
The sign on the Descendant cannot identify a person, prove a relationship will form, or decide whether it should continue. It is easy to turn a symbolic description into a rigid list of desired traits, which overlooks the actual individual. A birth time that is missing or several hours uncertain also makes the angle unreliable. Keep the seventh house as a question about how one meets another person in an actual setting, and check the chart inputs before making even that limited comparison.
