Their recurring argument concerns class safety, but its opening move is enchanted: Teren says, “Good catch,” Lio hears contempt, the gong resonates, and Lio’s body prepares to kneel. Anger then arrives to defend dignity after dignity has already been threatened.

When Teren offers genuine praise outside that controlling pattern, Lio can cast Kindness Heard Without Shadow and hear the innocent compliment as kindly meant. This corrects the translation without requiring him to treat actual commands as kindness.

03 / CONTRADICTION IS NOT ESCALATION

A relationship cannot become peaceful by making one voice unable to oppose

Lio’s former instructor trained him to experience disagreement as disloyalty and his own objection as dangerous. Even without the gong, he sometimes loses the ability to say no once Teren’s tone resembles that old authority.

He can cast The Voice That Answers Back and restore his ability to contradict the voice that once controlled him. The result may initially produce more visible disagreement, not less. That is progress: an argument between two speaking people is safer than harmony built on one vanished answer.

Teren must then learn to hear contradiction as information rather than abandonment. Stopping the quarrel loop changes both partners’ offices.

04 / THE ARGUMENT AFTER THE SPELL

Success is a conflict that can change shape

Without the gong, Teren and Lio still disagree about whether a student should advance. Teren states the risk; Lio asks for evidence; neither hears the question as a coup. They postpone the decision and inspect the landing together.

The spell has not made them placid. It has restored sequence: trigger identified, bodies free, speech heard, anger directed, evidence considered. A stopped argument is not one that never happens again. It is one that no longer has to end the same way.
