A baseline protects the reader from treating ordinary warmth as supernatural obedience. It also catches the opposite danger: a dramatic result so unlike the beloved that “success” may actually be coercion.

Suppose municipal archivist Sera directs a love spell toward Eli, a cartographer who visits her reading room twice a year. Her claim is narrow: let him notice her as someone he might freely court. Within a week, Eli books four appointments, wears the blue ink color from Sera’s petition, and praises every opinion she offers.
At first the repetitions look exquisite. Then Sera corrects a map date incorrectly and Eli agrees before checking the document. He abandons a long-planned field trip because she once said she disliked being left alone. The signs answer “attention,” but they exceed “freely.”

THE VERDICT
The spell is producing effects, but effect is not the same as a sound result. The strongest sign is not Eli’s arrival. It is the disappearance of his ordinary resistance.
02 / DESIRE IS NOT DEVOTION
Different outcomes leave different signatures
Attraction may appear as attention, approach, curiosity, or embodied nervousness. Devotion reorganizes priorities. Obedience suppresses contradiction. A sign becomes useful only after the practitioner knows which of these the spell was meant to affect.
Sera needs to distinguish Eli’s true desire from the compliance gathering around it. She can cast The Desire Burning Overhead and see what he actually wants, however carefully concealed. That revelation does not excuse the coercive effects; it prevents false devotion from being mistaken for the whole heart.
If true desire is absent, the answer is not to intensify the working. If it is present, it still cannot justify agreement without judgment.
03 / SIGNS MUST SURVIVE DISCONFIRMATION
A working that can explain everything proves nothing
Once every bird, song, notification, and accidental meeting is counted as success, there is no remaining event that could challenge the interpretation. That is not a powerful divination system. It is a closed story.
Sera therefore gives greater weight to independent evidence: Eli’s changed calendar, his uncharacteristic agreement, the timing of his appointments, and what returns when enchantment is removed. Symbolic echoes may enrich the reading, but conduct bears consequence.
Disconfirmation is equally valuable. If Eli resumes arguing over map dates while retaining affectionate interest, the difference isolates coercion from attraction. If all interest vanishes, Sera learns that the spell created more of the bond than she hoped.
04 / LOVE CAN HIDE ITS OWN WARNINGS
The practitioner’s enchantment may be interpretive
A love spell can alter the target, but the practitioner may also become enchanted by the result: every warning is reframed as intensity, destiny, or proof. Sera’s delight in the blue ink makes her slow to notice the cancelled field trip.
To recover the evidence she edited out, Sera can cast Remember Every Warning Love Concealed. The returning warnings give her a chronology: when Eli stopped correcting her, when his work narrowed, and when admiration became obedience.
Memory does not decide whether any genuine affection exists. It restores the missing facts needed to decide what should happen next.
05 / THE VERDICT AFTER THE SIGN
A sound result enlarges reality instead of shrinking a person
Sera’s final assessment uses four measures: the event answers the claim; it departs from baseline; another source corroborates it; and the beloved remains capable of proportionate choice. A spectacular sign that fails the fourth measure is a warning.
When Eli’s judgment returns, he keeps one appointment and cancels the others. He disagrees about the map, takes the field trip, and asks Sera to dinner after he returns. The smaller pattern is the more credible one because it contains both desire and a life beyond desire.
The clearest sign a love spell is working well is not that everything bends toward romance. It is that affection becomes more legible while two complete people remain standing.
