At closing time, Esmé lays the three materials on separate blotters. The fragrances mingle in the room, but their relationships do not.

A named heart is not the same as a general field of attraction
Esmé’s rose office is exact because Nilo is not a symbolic “future partner.” He is the person she wants. The thorn remains conceptually important: a boundary belongs to the same plant as invitation.
If she chooses the full consequence of directed love magic, Esmé can cast The Heart Named Mine to make Nilo fall completely in love with her. The magnitude belongs in plain view; rose imagery should not disguise a total change in a named person’s heart as mere floral warmth.
That clarity also prevents rosemary from being recruited into resurrection of the old marriage. Memory can stay fragrant without being ordered to compete with the living.

Nilo’s confession changes the herb selection. Basil’s domestic warmth and apple’s future-bearing sweetness now fit better than intensifying damiana’s anonymous heat.
