A new household keeps walking into the wrong room
Suppose Osei, Mara, and their aunt move into a narrow row house and accept an antique green chest from the former owner.
Anyone passing the chest forgets why they entered the hall, then agrees that the locked back room must remain untouched. At night, footsteps stop at its threshold.

THE HOUSE IS NOT ONE PRESENCE
The chest carries an enchantment from the former owner; the footsteps belong to a hostile house spirit guarding it. The household’s obedience is consequence, not evidence the whole building rejects them.
Restore room purpose before reading atmosphere

The repeated prohibition shows shared obedience. Mara can cast Release the Enchanted Household to free everyone from that common enchantment without requiring agreement about the chest’s fate.
Clean by provenance, not by room count
Moving clockwise through every room would impose symmetry on unlike histories. The hall needs restored purpose, the chest needs removal from circulation, the household needs released choice, and the back threshold needs protection.
Sequence follows relations. Clear observation before interpreting footsteps; separate the carrier before deciding whether the building itself remains hostile.
A clean house may keep memory
Scratches, old paint, and the former owner’s garden plans need not vanish. Cleansing removes illegitimate command, not historical texture. A house can remember without governing.
This distinction lets the new residents inherit useful knowledge while refusing enchanted authority. The aim is present occupancy, not manufactured blankness.
Occupancy is the restored capacity
The house becomes theirs when each person can enter a room for a chosen reason, disagree about its use, and cross thresholds without inherited obedience.
The final sign is mundane and exact: the back room becomes storage, studio, or emptiness by present decision. Cleansing has done its work when the address no longer decides for them.
New occupancy also needs a record of permission. Who may leave objects, who holds keys, and which inherited items remain are not merely domestic details; they are the grammar by which the household distinguishes welcome from claim. Without that grammar, a later token can exploit the same ambiguity as the chest.
Osei, Mara, and their aunt do not need identical feelings about the house. One may love its age while another distrusts it. Their freedom to hold unlike readings is part of the cleansing verdict: shared residence no longer requires shared obedience.
