Knot the measured limit
String turns an invisible limit into direction and tension. It can circle without crushing, join without merging, knot one action, or leave a release end deliberately visible. That legibility is its greatest magical advantage.
The material also exposes imprecision. If the whole figure is wrapped when only one conduct should stop, the spell says more than the practitioner may intend. If every end is hidden, duration becomes indefinite by accident.
A string binding should reveal exactly what cannot move—and what must remain free.
01 / READ THE LINE
Direction changes the sentence before any knot is tied
Suppose Ansel repairs ceremonial textiles in a guild hall. His former master bound a red cord around the guild ledger so every apprentice who signs feels permanent loyalty to her, even after training ends. Ansel wants to restrain her ability to command new apprentices without binding the workers themselves.
The cord currently runs from each signature toward the master’s name. Its direction reveals the actual spell: service and identity are gathered into one person. Reversing pressure is less exact than ending the forced loyalty already present.
Ansel can cast Unbind the Forced Loyalty and unmake the binding that compels loyalty to the named master. The release clears the old cord-claim before any new restraint is placed upon her conduct.
ILLUSTRATIVE CASE THE LEDGER WITH NO LOOSE END
A guild calls permanent obedience continuity
The red cord has been repaired so many times that no apprentice can find its beginning. Its knots correspond not to tasks but to names.
When the master pulls the ledger closer, apprentices abandon outside work and return. Ansel discovers one unknotted pale strand beneath the spine: the original cord once included a release after completed training.

A severed forced link need not erase learned skill
Ansel values techniques the master taught him. The coercive attachment exploits that gratitude by making departure feel like betrayal. Cutting the link should not require declaring the apprenticeship worthless.
He can cast Cut the Caster's Forced Attachment and sever the imposed attachment between each apprentice and its caster. Skill, memory, and freely chosen affiliation remain outside the cut.
String makes this distinction visible: the line of coercion ends, while the textile of shared knowledge retains many other threads.
04 / THE RELEASE POINT
A binding earns trust by naming how it can end
The new restraint lasts only while the master attempts to attach loyalty to a signature. If she abandons that conduct, the knot has no action left to hold.
Ansel records the condition beside the exposed pale strand. The binding remains strong because its limit is visible, not despite it.
